Getting in
-
Install XMage
A free program that plays Magic with every rule enforced, so nobody has to remember how the stack works. It is a desktop app, not a website.
- Take the full download, about 250 MB.
- Unzip anywhere, then run
run-LAUNCHER.cmdon Windows, or theXMageLauncherjar on Mac and Linux. - The launcher handles Java and updates itself. Say yes to what it offers.
-
Connect
Hit Launch Client, choose Connect to another server, and enter
mtg.subch.uson port17171. Pick any username and leave the password blank — there is no registration. -
Bring a deck
Grab one from above, or paste a list you already have into the converter below. Drop the
.dckfile into theDecksfolder inside your XMage directory. -
Sit down
Open Tables, create a game, pick Commander and four players. Put a password on the table if you want a private pod. Voice on Discord, or use the in-client chat.
Already have a list?
Convert a decklist
Paste from Moxfield, Archidekt, or plain text. Every card gets checked against what XMage actually refuses, before you download.
Good to know
What do the bracket numbers mean?
Wizards' own power scale. Bracket 2 is precon level, 3 is an upgraded deck, 4 is seriously tuned. The number shown is worked out from the deck's actual contents — how many cards from the official Game Changers list it runs, plus whether it does mass land destruction or chains extra turns. Agree a bracket before you shuffle and the evening goes better.
Do I need to buy anything?
No. XMage gives you every card ever printed. That is rather the point.
The table says it is down.
The server runs around the clock, so this should be rare. The check runs every few minutes and can lag, so try connecting anyway before assuming the worst — then shout on Discord.
XMage rejected my deck.
Nearly always one of three things: not exactly 100 cards, a card outside your commander's colour identity, or something on this server's ban list (stricter than paper — Mana Crypt, Jeweled Lotus, Dockside and Nadu are all out). The converter above tells you which before you load the client.
Where do deck files go?
The Decks folder inside wherever you unzipped XMage. Drop the
.dck in and it appears when you sit down at a table.
